Stochastic UX: Design for Non-Deterministic Systems
Exploring Probabilistic Approaches in Design with Daan Rongen
The rise of agentic AI — systems that autonomously plan, act, and adapt — is transforming how we think about user experience. Unlike traditional deterministic interfaces, agentic systems produce stochastic outputs, dynamically generating content, layouts, and interactions in response to user prompts and environmental context. In this talk, Daan Rongen explores the emerging field of stochastic UX, asking: what does good design look like when the system itself is an active participant?
As a creative coder Daan Rongen has the ability to bridge the gap between technical know-how and artistic expression. By combining his coding skills with a keen eye for design, Daan is able to create interactive experiences that engage users on multiple levels. Using a range of computational practices such as shape synthesis and generative art allow him to use machine intelligence creatively and provide innovative solutions to complex problems.ok like when the system itself is an active participant?
Location and accessibility:
The presentation will take place in the Theo Thijssenhuis (Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences). This is located next to Weesperplein in Amsterdam. CMDonderdag
Under the name CMDonderdag, our Communication and Multimedia Design program regularly organizes in-house presentations by external professionals. The topics of these presentations are very diverse. Sometimes they are "high and mighty" and sometimes they delve into "pixel perfect" depth. But there is always a connection to our field: digital design. We primarily expect our own (highly motivated) students, lecturers, and our external partners. This creates an interesting mix of attendees who can socialize after the presentation with drinks. The presentations are free and everyone is welcome, as long as there are seats available.
