About
This is the page for the event in April. There will be a different page for the June event
The web plays an important role in our daily lives. It started as an idealist place for a few tech savvy scientists, and now, 30 years later it is a completely different place. Since we have to spend so much time here we think it is a good idea to ask the question: What is the web that you want?
The event is free to attend for everybody, but please do register below, so we can make sure we have enough chairs and enough bites and drinks.
In this first event we invited these people to try to explain to us what web they want:
Marleen Stikker
Marleen Stikker is founder and executive director of Waag Futurelab. Waag Futurelab reinforces critical reflection on technology, develops technological and social design skills, and encourages social innovation. Marleen leads the trans-disciplinary team of designers, artists and scientists, utilising Public Research and Key Enabling Methodologies to empower people to participate in the collective design of open, fair and inclusive futures. Marleen founded 'De Digitale Stad' (The Digital City) in 1993, the first virtual community introducing free public access to the Internet in Amsterdam. Marleen Stikker strongly adheres to the Maker's Bill of Rights motto: 'If You Can't Open It, You Don't Own It'.
Marleen will talk about the idea that the web is broken, but that we can fix it.
Hidde de Vries
Hidde de Vries is a front-end + accessibility + tech ethics specialist. He works on web standards for the Dutch government, he quite often does public talks and he is part part of the W3C's AB.
Hidde hasn’t decided yet if he wants to talk about ethics, or about a sustainable web. Both perhaps?
Sanne Peters
Sanne studied bio-engineering and bio-informatics, but soon after rolled into front-end development, information design and design systems. She has been doing that since 2008. Her love for science, math and complexity has always been strong and has been a red thread through all she does Think data-visualizations, dashboard design and working on other weird generative concepts.
On the not-so techie side of things she grows trees, makes bonsai and paints a lot.
And sometimes she gets worked up about stuff and writes articles about it.
Sanne is going to talk about a kinder and gentler web: Can we live in a world that does not treat us as products? A world that does not make us a cog in the giant machines of capitalism? Can we instead, live in a world where caring for each other is the main goal and running a business is a secondary one. Sanne thinks we can.
Justus Sturkenboom
Justus Sturkenboom is a Philosophy/Computer Science Lecturer at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. He teaches, among others, in the #FDND Associate degree and the #denkerslab applied philosophy minor programme.
Justus is going to look at the individual words the, web, you, and want from different philosical angles.
Niels Leenheer
Niels is a self-professed browser geek. Back in the day, he created HTML5test, and loves the web platform and standards. He is currently obsessed with connecting the web to physical devices, which sometimes leads to unexpected results, such as a CSS-powered flamethrower, which he is legally prohibited from demonstrating under city ordinances. For his day job, he is CTO of Salonhub and creates web applications for hair salons.
Niels will talk about “How he used CSS animations to draw a clock on an oscilloscope blew up an 1980s oscilloscope and almost caused a fire.”
Side events
There will be short presentations of fantastic work by students, there will be an alternative text writing breakout room, and there might be lasers!
