About

About the presentation:
On Wednesday June 4 we organize the one and only unofficial pre-CSS Day Afternoon Event. This event is open to everyone. To all visitors and speakers of CSS Day who are in Amsterdam already, to all students and lecturers of CMD Amsterdam, and to everybody else who is interested in CSS and in the web. And to everyone who attends the Official Pre-conference Meetup at IO Digital (https://www.meetup.com/coven-of-wisdom-amsterdam/events/307063681/), but wants more. We have a wonderfully diverse program with two fantastic speakers, and a showcase of the incredible experiments our students have done with current and future CSS.

Nils Binder
Nils Binder has worked in web design and development for over twenty years, successfully bridging the gap between creative design and technical implementation. With extensive experience as both a UX designer and front-end developer, he has collaborated with clients including Coca-Cola, Red Bull, OECD, and FC Schalke 04. Currently, Nils leads the web development team at 9elements, where his projects have earned recognition such as the German Design Award. He enjoys sharing his knowledge through widely-read blog articles and speaking engagements at international conferences.

Unwrapping Web Design: Making Room for Creativity
Web design today often feels limited—not because of browsers, but because our tools haven't kept up. Over time, we've built a bunch of rules and shortcuts that make designing faster, but also less creative. Now we're stuck with design tools that hold us back, pushing us towards the same predictable results. It's time to rethink the way we design for the web. Let's move past old habits and embrace the real power of modern browsers. This talk is about breaking free from outdated patterns and creating web designs that are fresh, personal, and truly innovative.

Miriam Suzanne
Miriam is a hybrid media artist based in Denver, CO. She makes web things with OddBird, music with Teacup Gorilla, and live performance with Grapefruit lab. Miriam is an Invited Expert on the W3C CSS Working group, a member of the Sass core team, and a teacher – providing workshops and training to companies and conferences around the world. She had a lead role in developing several new CSS features like cascade layers, container queries, and scope. These days, Miriam is also making pottery, socks, and mechanical clocks. It's fun to make things.

Tech Is Always Politics
Every technology emerges from a perspective on the world, a vision for what could be changed or improved. As a recent fair invention, the web has a well-documented mission statement – and many of the features we encounter every day can be traced back to that mission. So what is our political role as web creators and implementors now? And how does it relate to a global far-right movement centered on techno-“utopian” visions for “AI” and the future of technology? I don't have all the answers, but I think the discussion is essential.

Students
The students of the minor Web Design & Development have been experimenting with modern and future CSS. Guided by an incredible team of lecturers (Sanne 't Hooft, Nils Binder and Roel Nieskens) they explored the edges of what's possible with CSS today. We'll show some highlights from this course. The students will be present as well, you can talk to them after the talks.

Location and accessibility:
The event will be held on the 9th floor of the Kohstammhuis on Wibautstraat 2 in Amsterdam. It starts at 4:00 PM, the afternoon before CSS Day. After the event there will be time for some drinks with all the other visitors. And after the drinks there will be two tour guides: one of them will show you the way to the official Pre CSS Day event at IO Digital. They have food! The other guide will walk those invited through the beautiful center of Amsterdam to the speakers dinner. Let us know if you'll be there on our Gath.io page, so we can organize enough chairs, and enough drinks.

CMDonderdag
Under the name CMDonderdag, we as the Communication and Multimedia Design program regularly organize presentations by external professionals in-house. The topics of these presentations are very diverse. Sometimes they go 'high over' and sometimes 'pixel perfect' in depth. But there is always a link with our field: digital design. We mainly expect our own (highly motivated) students, teachers and our external partners. This creates an interesting mix of visitors who can meet each other at the drinks after the presentation. The presentations are free of charge and everyone is welcome, as long as there are places.
