B40 Boston - Hackathon Planning Meeting

About

TL;DR: planning for hackathon, fall, and any future events/meetings

Cyberdeck Hackathon (Sunday, August 16th)! See @ Zach for more details! Might need volunteer from Wireless Club to host space. This meeting will be held for planning this event!

Agenda 2: We need future topics! Also, addressing potential and ongoing issues with organizing Huntington Hackers: It’s been a rough time in Summer since there’s been low attendance, but I think it's overall been a success, even had some of our best meetings despite lower attendance and we’ve hosted our first hackathon outside of regular meetings. That said, I think we can organize meetings better and I’ve highlighted a couple of problems that have been brought up with me in conversations. Meeting Speakers and Topics: I know it's been hard to organize meetings and topics, but so far in the past semesters presentations have been done by a few core members, and it's been quite unsustainable in both burnout and rushed presentations. It’s clear that we need to plan ahead more for future meetings, and I would love to hear your ideas on this, especially from people outside of Northeastern. Also, I personally would love to see more self hosting and those meetings in the past have lacked participation and also tiring? Outreach: This meet up has been dominated by Northeastern students in the past, and I think most of us want more involvement from people outside of College. I honestly think our non-Northeastern members have been a highlight of this group, and I would love to see more voices. I think we do have to discuss whether or not a non-free software platform would be good for the group, like Discord or Facebook. It would also be nice to get some demographics on everyone’s meeting times! Funding and Involvement with Northeastern: External funding has always been an issue with this meet up. I have tried applying for funding in the past from orgs, but honestly it would be so much better if we had a more organized system and the whole applying process itself takes time. There has been talks about becoming an official Northeastern club. While that will make life easier, it means that this will be officially under Northeastern management. We like talking about surveillance, talking about palantir and ice, and we like to get political sometimes, and Northeastern historically hates this. Also, being an official Northeastern club means that members outside of the group may be excluded from certain events and barred from close involvement.
